Serial number *** LEICA COLLECTING - Leica collecting is a fascinating field which has attracted collectors of all ages, from those who used the Leica cameras when they were youngsters to those who have just acquired their first camera within the last few years. Hence, there is a demand worldwide for cameras of all ages, from the first Leica I with fixed lens to the latest limited editions.
Leica I (C) - 1930-31. The first Leica with interchangeable lenses. Two variations:
--Non-Standardized lens mount - Lenses were custom fitted to each camera because the distance from the lens flange to the film plane was not standard. The lens flange is not engraved, but each lens is numbered with the last three digits of the body serial number. A very few (first couple hundred made) had the full serial number on the lens. Most which do not have a swing-down viewfinder mask were fitted with Hektor lenses. It is difficult to locate an outfit with two lenses, let alone three lenses. With swing-down mask and 35mm, 50mm, and 135mm lenses, all with matching number.
-Standardized lens mount - The lens mount on the body has a small "o" engraved at the top of the body flange. Lenses now standardized and interchangeable from one body to another. With f3.5/50mm.
Leica Standard (E) -1932-48. Similar to standardized "C", but smaller (12mm dia.) rewind knob, which pulls out for easier rewinding. A rare camera especially if seen in black and nickel finish with rotating rangefinder, nickel lens.
